The Executive Director of Finance at the Church of the Incarnation (“Incarnation”) is responsible for managing the financial operations of the organization, ensuring the organization’s financial health and sustainability. This role will oversee all financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting, financial analysis, investments, audit activities, and compliance requirements. The Executive Director of Finance will work closely with the Rector, the Treasurer, and the Executive Leadership Team to develop and implement financial strategies that support the organization’s mission and goals.

This role’s responsibilities include overseeing cash flow planning, preparing and reviewing budgets, and tracking operational metrics (KPIs.) To be successful in this role, you should have in-depth knowledge of risk management methods and the ability to create forecasting models.

Ultimately, the Executive Director of Finance will ensure we manage our resources in the most beneficial way and help maximize our funding.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Financial Management
    • Develop and implement financial strategies that support Incarnation’s vision and goals
    • Manage and oversee all financial operations, including accounting, budgeting, forecasting, and financial analysis. Supervise the accounting department to ensure smooth day-to-day transactions
    • Ensure the accuracy and completeness of financial records, including the general ledger, accounts payable and receivable, payroll, and other financial systems
    • Oversee cash flow management
    • Working closely with the Controller:
      • Prepare and present financial reports to the Rector and Treasurer, providing analysis and recommendations as needed. Provide clear analysis and comments for the monthly, quarterly and annual financial statements enabling the Treasurer to report to the Vestry
      • Ensure compliance with all financial reporting and regulatory requirements, including tax filings, audits, and other reporting requirements
      • Manage relationships with external partners, including banks, auditors, and other financial service providers
  • Budgeting and Forecasting
    • Develop and oversee the annual budgeting process, working closely with the Executive Leadership Team and department heads to develop realistic and achievable budgets
    • Monitor actual performance against budget and provide regular updates and analysis
    • Develop and maintain financial forecasting models that support long-term financial planning and decision-making
  • Strategic Planning and Leadership
    • Work closely with the Executive Leadership Team to develop and implement strategic plans and goals that support Incarnation’s mission and vision. Track important KPIs and analyze trends
    • Co-lead, with the Treasurer, the Finance meetings, collaborating with other Finance Committee members to provide strategic financial guidance and support to Incarnation
    • Provide leadership and mentorship to the finance and accounting team, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and professional development
    • Collaborate with Directional Leadership Team to develop and implement strategies that support departmental goals
    • Work with the Rector and Finance Committee to develop and implement investment plans
  • Relations and Reporting
    • Report on the financial performance of Incarnation to the Executive Leadership Team and Treasurer, including regular updates on budget performance, forecasts, and financial risks and opportunities
    • Collaborate with the Executive Leadership Team and Treasurer to develop and implement financial policies and procedures that align with the Incarnation’s values and strategic goals
    • Represent the organization externally as required
  • Tax Filing and Compliance
    • Ensure all financial and accounting operations comply with federal and state laws and follow GAAP for non-profits
    • Oversee all tax filings and compliance requirements, ensuring that Incarnation is in compliance with all relevant laws and regulations
    • Manage relationships with external auditors and other financial service providers to ensure compliance with all reporting and regulatory requirements
    • Partner with the Controller to coordinate annual audit activities
  • Perform other duties as assigned

SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • Proven track record of successful financial management, including experience developing and implementing financial strategies, managing budgets, and overseeing financial reporting and compliance
  • Strong leadership and management skills, with experience building and leading high-performing teams
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Excellent time management skills with a proven ability to meet deadlines. Ability to prioritize tasks and to delegate them when appropriate
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to communicate financial information to non-financial stakeholders
  • Excellent knowledge of data analysis, risk management and forecasting methods
  • Hands-on experience with accounting and financial management software
  • Expertise in MS Excel
  • Passion for the vision and work of Incarnation
  • Passionate interest in mentoring others and working as a team
  • Strong understanding of how nonprofit organizations are structured. Knowledge of religious organizations a plus

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • At least 10 years of progressively responsible experience in financial management.
  • At least 3-5 years non-profit experience in a leadership role
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required; CPA strongly preferred as very strong accounting skills are required

TIME REQUIREMENT

  • The position is regular full day office hours, 40 hours per week, with benefits available
  • 3-4 times a year, attend all-staff events on Sundays
