Texas Gun Sense is seeking a mission-driven Development Director to oversee and administer all annual giving and grow our fundraising throughout the state. The Development Director will play an integral role in the organization, managing an ambitious events plan, digital fundraising program, cultivation and stewardship activities, and donor engagement. The ideal candidate has a passion for fundraising and a commitment to working for a future safe from gun violence. The Development Director will be joining us at an exciting and pivotal time, as we grow our impact and strengthen the gun safety movement in Texas.

Texas Gun Sense is the only statewide non-profit organization founded in Texas that advocates for common sense, evidence-based policies to prevent gun injuries and deaths.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Development Director will work closely with the Executive Director and the Board of Directors. Texas Gun Sense does not have a physical office, allowing remote work with flexible hours. The Development Director will ideally be located in Austin, but applicants from other areas of the state will also be considered. Evening and weekend hours may be necessary at times. The position requires 40 hours/week, on average, with the expectation of regular meetings and phone calls with the Executive Director. Limited travel around the state will be required.

General responsibilities are as follows:

  • Create a comprehensive fundraising campaign and social media strategy focusing on donor acquisition and retention.

  • Identify and cultivate major donor prospects across the state with a focus on building relationships.

  • Organize and coordinate all fundraising events for the organization (virtual and in-person).

  • Develop and implement stewardship opportunities as well as models to expand donor base.

  • Draft fundraising communications.

  • Track donations, monitor financial goals, and ensure timely acknowledgments.

  • Assist Executive Director with grant writing.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A firm commitment to the mission and values of Texas Gun Sense.

  • Minimum of three to five years of experience in nonprofit or political fundraising with a proven track record of soliciting, closing, and stewarding gifts.

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to develop strong relationships with a variety of stakeholders.

  • Strong writing, editing, and proofing skills, along with excellent problem-solving skills.

  • Strong project management, time management, and organizational skills, including setting priorities and improving on existing systems.

  • Friendly, outgoing, and collaborative approach. A passion for social change with a good sense of humor.

  • Experience with donor database management and systems to track campaigns. (Texas Gun Sense uses SALSA donor management and fundraising CRM.)

  • Proficiency with office technology and information systems, including Google Workspace.

  • Experience with internet-based communication and social/digital media tools.

  • Personal initiative and a confident, professional work style. Ability to work independently and to exercise sound judgment. Flexibility and a willingness to take on new tasks as responsibilities evolve.

  • Passion and skills for setting and executing strategic goals.

  • Knowledge of the Texas philanthropic and political community is preferred.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:

Salary range is $45,000 – $65,000, depending on experience. Paid time off.
