Job Summary

The Development Associate:

  • Proactively researches potential and current donors and provides regular and prompt acknowledgement and stewardship
  • Assists with grant research, writing, reporting, and management of grant calendar
  • Performs data entry into Blackbaud Raiser’s Edge software
  • Collaborates with team for communications writing (digital and print collateral)
  • Assists with general development department functions including events and speaking engagements
  • Other miscellaneous tasks as identified

Essential Functions

  • Responsible for conducting the full range of activities required to prepare, submit, and manage grant proposals as assigned. Complies with all reporting as assigned by funders.
    Acquires and maintains sound knowledge and understanding of the organization to adequately articulate the programs and mission for grant and communications writing.
  • Collaborates with development and program staff to create compelling and accurate grant proposals.
  • Responds to internal and external customer questions, concerns and needs in a helpful, pleasant, and timely manner.
  • Researches and communicates information pertaining to donors to team.
  • Serves as an active, contributing member of the development team and assists with other fundraising projects to further the VNA mission.
  • Assists at all fundraising events and outreach activities.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Experience & Qualifications

  • 0-2 years’ experience
  • Bachelor’s degree required; degree focus in English, Journalism, or Public Relations preferred.
  • Excellent writing skills. Two writing samples are required with application and a proofreading test will be performed during the interview process.
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills.
  • Possesses public speaking skills to professionally represent VNA in the community.
  • Ability to think and write creatively to contribute to group strategic discussions.
  • Flexible, enthusiastic, and proactive team player.
  • Organized, thorough and detail oriented.
  • Demonstrates good time management skills with minimal supervision.
  • Prior experience in a nonprofit environment with knowledge of the Dallas philanthropic community a plus.
  • Must have basic knowledge of computers and demonstrate skills in Microsoft Office including Excel, Outlook, and Word. Experience with Raiser’s Edge NXT is a plus, but if no prior experience, a willingness to be trained to be proficient with this system.
  • Ability to work independently, effectively, and efficiently.
  • Exhibits the characteristics of courtesy, honesty, and integrity at all times.

  • Mostly administrative working requiring vision.
  • Manual dexterity to operate office equipment (computer, copier, fax).
  • Hazardous Exposure: Minimal exposure to hazards.

Physical Demands

The physical requirements of persons in this position classification are:

  • Capacity to exert up to 25 pounds of force.
  • Endurance to sit for extended periods of time.
  • Limited to use of Office equipment, e.g., computer, copier, fax use.
  • Occasional driving for business purposes.
