Congregation Shearith Israel is a warm, welcoming, and dynamic Conservative synagogue with approximately one thousand families located in the heart of Preston Hollow area of Dallas, Texas. We are seeking an experienced financial professional who can serve as our new Controller and manage the finance and human resource departments for both the synagogue and its foundation. The Controller will be a key member of the synagogue’s executive team and reports directly to the Chief Operating Officer. Ideal candidates will be comfortable working within a religious organization and deeply motivated to helping it continue enhancing its financial health, stewardship, and sustainability.

Major Duties & Responsibilities

  • Prepare monthly general fund financial statements, including preparation of journal entries, review of general ledger reports, and researching and reporting on monthly variance issues.
  • Prepare and manage the annual general fund budget, working closely with COO, staff, and officers.
  • Oversee staff accountant and all related duties.
  • Manage annual synagogue and foundation audit process, including overseeing and/or preparing year-end adjustments and reconciliations, submitting audit schedules, and finalizing draft reports with the auditors.
  • Oversee the accounting records for the foundation.
  • Manage the accounts receivable and accounts payable process, including reviewing and approving all invoices and working with the accounting staff to ensure all transactions are processed timely and correctly.
  • Manage/facilitate the semi-monthly payroll, employee onboarding, and the renewal of employee benefit plans.
  • Review daily all cash needs, and facilitate, with the COO, any needed transfers/borrowings.
  • As needed, prepare various analysis reports, attend committee/staff meetings, and assist in receiving bids for insurance renewals and vendors.

Required Experience, Skills, and Abilities

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in accounting
  • Have at least 7+ years of relevant experience in the accounting field
  • Working knowledge of Fund Accounting preferred
  • Exceptional organizational and project management skills
  • Superior verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent problem solver, with skills to find answers and resolve issues
  • Strong technical skills with proficiency in Microsoft Office
  • Ability to supervise staff, nurture strong relationships, and foster an environment of warmth and teamwork
