Controller

This is a full-time, exempt position located in North Dallas:

  • Management of daily finance, accounting and audit work for 3 legal entities including the council, endowment and STEM Center of Excellence.
  • Building skills in collaboration with fund development and operating departments with grants.
  • Leadership development in managing finance team and financial policies and systems.

JOB SUMMARY:

The Controller leads the work of the Finance Team in completing accounting, budgeting and forecasting, NMTC and loan accounting, accounts payable and receivable, cash receipts, compliance reporting, payroll review and monthly account reconciliations. This position leads audit schedule preparation and coordinates the work of assigned board committees with the CFAO.

Requirements:

  • Relevant education in business/finance/accounting, CPA preferred.
  • Familiar with nonprofit operations and financial considerations.
  • Strong interpersonal, analytical and technology skills.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS (This list may not include all of the duties assigned):

  • Reviews and approves monthly general ledger journal entries and reviews balance sheet reconciliations with staff and CFAO.
  • Develops and manages the budget process, completing monthly reviews of variances with departmental budget managers and provides relevant training and support throughout the budget cycle. Works with the CFAO and Strategy Team on current year forecast and long-term budget forecasting and scenarios.
  • Manages schedules, payables and cash flows for New Markets Tax Credit transactions, loan/financing transactions and lease transactions.
  • Manages grant and governmental compliance reporting with Fund Development and CFAO.
  • Maintains training resources for newly hired or promoted managers regarding budget functions, invoicing procedures and credit card procedures.
  • Approves monthly council sales tax reporting prior to electronic submission.
  • Manages the retail, fall product and cookie sale revenue reconciliation, collection process and payables to vendors, service units and troops.
  • Manages set up of project codes for programs and events and interfaces between various systems and the accounting general ledger.
  • Manages departmental plans of work and develops skills/knowledge of Finance staff.
  • Prepares schedules and footnote support for annual audit and 990 financial reporting.
  • Develops and implements effective financial planning policies, procedures, controls and resources and documents in online process library.
  • Provides proactive and responsive customer service to internal management team, employees, board members and volunteers as a business partner.
  • Responsible for direct support for managers and directors regarding financial reporting, compliance, budgeting, forecasting and budget mitigation planning.
  • Collaborates with Procurement Manager on capital budget, capital expenditure tracking and fixed asset accounting.
  • Works with CFAO on administration of assigned board committees.
  • Provides oversight to staff working with troop volunteers on matters related to troop and service unit banking and finance.
  • Maintains confidentiality of financial matters, records and information.

OTHER:

  • Must be able to travel within established geographic areas and council service centers, as necessary.
  • Must have reliable transportation, hold a valid drivers’ license and meet GSNETX driving record & automobile insurance requirements.

Qualifications

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Management, Accounting, Finance or related field or equivalent.
  • 5 or more years of accounting, financial management, planning, budgeting and managerial experience.
  • Familiarity with Abila software or similar accounting system preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP, financial reporting, compliance requirements and non-profit accounting preferred.
  • Excellent interpersonal verbal and written communications skills.
  • Ability to make effective presentations.
  • Experience and ability to interact effectively with staff, management and volunteers at all levels of the organization.
  • Ability to interact with diverse groups of people, work in a fast-paced environment, focus on details and meet deadlines.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite software, including Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Demonstrate and promote a climate of courtesy, respect and professionalism to coworkers, the volunteers served by this council, and others with whom this job puts them in contact.
  • Willingness to work a flexible schedule including evenings and weekends.

CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSES:

  • CPA or similar work experience strongly preferred.
