Description
Chimp Haven is a growing, national 501(c)3 nonprofit organization founded in 1995 to respond to a need for long-term, cost-effective social housing for chimpanzees no longer used in biomedical research. The goal of its founders was to develop a professionally run facility—a model sanctuary—providing exceptional, personalized care and an enriching home for hundreds of retired chimpanzees. With the formal designation by the National Institutes of Health in 2002, Chimp Haven became the National Chimpanzee Sanctuary—and today it is the world’s largest chimpanzee sanctuary hosting over 300 chimpanzees in a beautiful, forested habitat 15 miles south of Shreveport, Louisiana (and just 180 miles from Dallas).
Chimp Haven has received recent, national media attention with features in People magazine, The Today Show, the NYTimes, NPR and currently have a documentary series, “Meet the Chimps”, streaming on Disney+.
