Analytics Manager

Background:

Founded in 2018, the Child Poverty Action Lab (CPAL) has built an unprecedented coalition of local public agency CEOs collectively adopting a north star goal of reducing Dallas’ child poverty rate by 50% within a single generation. CPAL has embraced a strategic approach to tackling systemic issues underlying intergenerational poverty by focusing its support efforts on six Big Bet strategies for change. Data and analytic capabilities are an integral part of achieving this ambitious vision, requiring sound practices for data collection, rigorous approaches to data analysis, and openness in providing access to data to diverse stakeholders. The Analytics team at CPAL works across the organization, supporting a wide range of projects in each of the Big Bet areas, while also identifying new opportunities to improve the underlying conditions for Dallas’ civic and nonprofit communities to access, utilize, and act upon reliable data. 

Position Description:

In collaboration with CPAL’s Senior Directors and other members of the Analytics team, the Analytics Manager will take the lead on Analytics projects to fulfill the needs of the organization and its partners. The successful candidate will be detail-oriented, committed to disrupting cycles of intergenerational poverty using data-driven strategies, and motivated to uncover actionable insights. Additionally, ideal candidates will have experience working with databases, programmatic data analysis, data visualization, and the ability to effectively communicate with stakeholders.

Core responsibilities of the Analytics Manager will include:

• Leading analytics projects under the direction of the Senior Director of Analytics. Past examples of projects our Analytics team has worked on include the development of CPAL’s Community Resource Index, analyzing areas most in need of community services - such as afterschool programming, or developing one-pagers to support data sharing with local officials;
• Identifying and developing plans to address gaps in CPAL’s data inventory; 
• Establishing procedures for data collection, storage, and sharing to accomplish organizational needs, in collaboration with the Senior Director of Analytics and relevant CPAL leadership;
• Providing support and thought partnership to Analytics Associates, Fellows, and CPAL staff around the effective use of data to address challenges and increase mobility;
• Supporting partner organizations in accessing needed data to further their goals towards increasing upward mobility;
• Attending community meetings to understand how and where data and research can help advance the public discourse on pathways to upward mobility in Dallas. 

Qualifications:

Must Haves:

• A passion for prioritizing the interests of children, particularly those born furthest from opportunity, within the vision of Dallas’ future. 
• A desire and willingness to be truly curious. 
• A strong foundation in analytical reasoning in order to identify and communicate connections across diverse work areas. 
• An interest in learning about and expanding upon one’s knowledge of Dallas, specifically with an eye towards identifying and capturing new ways of understanding barriers to socioeconomic mobility in the city.
• Proficiency and experience using data analytics software and visualizations tools or languages, such as Python, R, QGIS, Alteryx, Tableau, or ArcGIS Pro to clean, analyze, and visualize data from multiple sources.
• Familiarity with research related to economic mobility, criminology, program evaluation, or other areas related to CPAL’s Key Outcomes, and An aptitude for learning state and local data systems relevant to CPAL’s work in North Texas.
• The ability to balance multiple projects through strong project management skills, prioritization of tasks, attentiveness to deadlines, and achieving project goals. 
• Solid communication and interpersonal skills; strong written communication skills—in email, documents, and presentations.
• Willingness to incorporate feedback from the team and work with urgency, humility, and competing priorities.
• Proficiency with standard office softwares, such as Microsoft Office or Google’s 
• BA/BS degree from a competitive university with a strong academic record, especially in the fields of Anthropology, Economics, Geography, Public Administration, Political Science, Sociology, Statistics, or similar fields. 
• Open to rolling up your sleeves to get the job done, even if it means working over 40 hours a week

Nice to Haves:

• Strong academic research skills with the ability to communicate results to varied audiences.
• Sound mathematical and statistical reasoning with the ability to translate work into meaningful insights.
• 2+ years of relevant experience preferred in a public sector role, business consulting role, or business analyst role
• A graduate degree or experience in a graduate research setting, especially in the fields of Anthropology, Economics, Geography, Public Administration, Political Science, Sociology, Statistics, or similar fields.

Compensation and Benefits:

• Compensation for this role ranges from $55,000 to $65,000, depending on experience and alignment with the job requirements.
