JOB SUMMARY:

The Director of Membership is responsible for developing, executing, and evaluating membership initiatives for the Arboretum. This role involves overseeing telemarketing efforts, directly engaging with members to facilitate upgrades and renewals, and expanding the membership base in alignment with fiscal goals. Expansion of the membership base by 10% each fiscal year is essential.

Key duties include implementing strategies to increase membership renewals and attract new members, identifying new market opportunities, and managing membership programs. Specific duties include implementing strategies and tactical program components that result in renewed and new members for the Arboretum. This position requires proactive communication with prospective and current members to achieve membership objectives. Collaboration with the Development team is essential to create a unified membership program featuring effective renewal systems, upgrade programs, and member events.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Membership Privileges & Benefits: Develop and recommend member benefits and privileges at all levels for approval. Review and ensure accuracy of all printed materials, media, and website data related to benefits and pricing.
  • Goal Achievement: Propose strategies to meet and exceed monthly membership goals and provide feedback on effective methods to secure new members.
  • Volunteer Management: Create, train, and manage a volunteer leadership group of 7-10 members, assigning tasks and holding them accountable for membership efforts.
  • On-Site Membership Solicitation: Support and oversee membership solicitation efforts at ticket gates during peak seasons and events where membership is promoted.
  • Reporting & Updates: Produce regular membership updates and reports, including executive summaries and data for monthly Earned Revenue reports.
  • Member Surveys: Collaborate with Marketing staff to develop and coordinate member surveys.
  • Member Events: Schedule, coordinate, and oversee member events (e.g., Garden of Music, Easter Egg Hunts) from planning through execution.
  • Annual Membership Meeting: Coordinate and facilitate the annual membership meeting.
  • Staff Coaching: Coach staff on various approaches for successful membership renewals and adjust strategies based on seasonal targets.
  • Advancement Support: Provide support across all areas of Advancement as needed.
  • Telemarketing Management: train, support, and evaluate Membership representatives to ensure effective telemarketing practices. Set daily/weekly/monthly call and revenue goals for staff.

REQUIRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, SKILLS OR COMPETENCIES:

  • Bachelor’s degree in related field or equivalent experience
  • Minimum 4+ years sales, customer service and supervisory experience desired
  • Two plus years in direct telemarketing and membership experience at a non-profit organization or association highly preferred.
  • Proficient computer skills in MS platform and specific computer applications as needed. Raiser’s edge database system experiences desired
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills required. A professional image and Executive Presence needed.  Excellent presentations, digital communication and phone skills/etiquette are essential.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including nights/weekends as needed.
  • Valid driver’s license to drive garden vehicles or personal vehicles for Dallas Arboretum business
  • Excellent judgement and problem-solving skills required. Candidates should be highly organized with the ability to multitask successfully.

While performing the duties of this job the employee should be able to:

  • Stand or walk in outside non-air-conditioned spaces for extending periods.
  • Sit or stand at a desk for prolonged periods of time
  • Ability to physically facilitate events/oversee member solicitation on property and offsite as needed.
  • Other duties may be assigned by a direct supervisor when necessary.
