REPORTING RELATIONSHIP: Reports to the Marketing Manager – Brand & Communications

POSITION OVERVIEW: The Communications Coordinator is responsible for the creative content and storytelling of Operation Kindness, working in a fast-paced newsroom-like environment to share the life changes of the amazing animals and people that Operation Kindness serves. The position is comfortable filming and editing on a variety of devices and programs to effectively capture and share the stories of our work as they are breaking. The Communications Coordinator should be comfortable working with tight deadline turnarounds.

This position works collaboratively with Marketing, Development, and Operations teams to gather content, photos, videos, and stories for email, written communications, photography, videography, and graphic design. This position assists the Marketing Manager – Brand & Communications as a brand steward, ensuring that the stories from the organization’s mission work are produced in high standards and align under the voice and style of the organization.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Concept, create, and edit high-quality compelling videos and photos of Operation Kindness animals, programs, and services, to support marketing & communication needs. Photos, videos and information may be taken/gathered at the shelter, in a studio, in a foster family’s home, or at events as needed on either a cell phone, mirrorless camera or DSLR.
  • Research, develop and maintain a strong internal network to seek out story ideas and stay informed of developments at Operation Kindness. Document and track ongoing and completed stories from start to finish.
  • Proactively seek and pitch content and story ideas from across the organization that can be used for media pitches and marketing and communications campaigns, working with the Marketing Manager – Brand and Communications on a content calendar.
  • Collaborate with team members across all departments to create and edit dynamic, engaging written, email, publications, marketing materials, and other communications.
  • Draft media pitches to accompany stories.
  • Assist with managing digital assets including categorizing and archiving photos, videos and marketing materials.
  • Assist in the tracking, analysis and reporting of marketing projects, metrics, and expenses.
  • Edit, proofread, and repurpose content as needed to ensure that it is accurate, compelling, and on brand to the organization style guides.
  • Work with volunteers as needed with efforts to support the marketing and communications program, including volunteer photographers.
  • Cross-train with the Digital and Social Media Coordinator to provide coverage of duties, as needed.
  • Create and present content creation training opportunities for Operation Kindness staff and volunteers.

General Responsibilities

  • Reports suspicion of animal abuse or neglect to any Manager or above immediately.
  • Reports any unsafe working conditions to any Manager or above immediately.
  • Maintains client, donor, volunteer, and staff confidentiality at all times.
  • Follows SOPs and other safety regulations at all times.
  • Completes all necessary and requested training in a timely manner in accordance with shelter policy.
  • Attends staff meetings.
  • Participates in shelter events as requested by Supervisor.
  • Performs other duties as requested or assigned.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

Education Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, marketing, public relations preferred or equivalent relevant experience.

Experience Requirements

  • Minimum of 1 year of experience in communications, marketing, or PR for an organization or company.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Excel.
  • Proficient in Canva and Adobe Creative Cloud, including Photoshop, InDesign, and Rush.
  • Proficient with digital photography/video equipment, including iPhone or other handheld device, and the ability to set up a space for photo/video shoots.
  • Proficient in mobile editing software such as CapCut.
  • Experience in the animal welfare field as an employee, volunteer, or foster; knowledge of animal welfare topics and industry trends preferred.

  • Strong oral and written communications skills.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple projects at a time and meet multiple deadlines in a week.
  • Knowledge of and/or experience with animal welfare organizations desired.
  • Experience working with volunteers desired.
  • Core competencies include: planning, learning on the fly, written communications, technical learning, and time management.
  • Is able to work equally well with paid staff members, clients and volunteers.
  • Is able to relate to person with varied backgrounds and beliefs.
  • Has a positive attitude; is open to new ideas.
  • Physical Effort: Position requires sitting or standing for extended periods of time and speaking over the telephone.
  • Working Conditions: May be exposed to unpleasant odors, noises, and animal feces. May be exposed to bites, scratches, and animal diseases.
