Job Title: Vice President - Development

Purpose: The VP-Development provides strategic direction, planning and implementation of all fundraising and development efforts of the Foundation, including major gifts, annual giving, donor stewardship and planned giving. This position works closely with the CEO, Board members, campaign cabinets and/or fundraising committees and councils, as well as volunteer leaders for the annual fundraising events, to support fundraising success and ensure that all efforts reflect sound policies and practices. This leadership role is focused on achieving peak performance in annual fund generation of $10 to $12 million, as well as gift expectancies, to ensure a strong and sustained revenue stream for the Foundation.  This position also serves as a visible and effective ambassador in the community (locally and statewide) on behalf of the Foundation.

Duties and Responsibilities:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to satisfactorily perform each of the essential duties and responsibilities listed below. The duties and responsibilities include the following, though other duties may be assigned.

  • Oversees and sets the direction and strategy of development for the organization, including campaigns, major gift programs, annual giving, fundraising events, corporate and foundation giving, and planned giving
  • Serves as a member of the senior management team, which includes the VP – Programs, the VP – Finance & Operations, COO and the President & CEO, to contribute to the overall direction, goals and performance of the Foundation
  • Advises the President & CEO and Board of Directors on matters related to fundraising and philanthropy; maintains effective working relationships with the Board of Directors, staff members, volunteers, individual donors, foundations, corporations and program partners
  • Personally maintains a portfolio of 80 – 100 donors and prospects rated at $100,000 to $500,000+, and makes no less than 6 solicitations per month
  • In collaboration with the CEO, directly manages fundraising with the Board of Directors, to ensure they meet the annual Board goal through their personal contributions, company contributions and introductions/referrals to new donors
  • Develops mission advancement presentations and manages fundraising initiatives between staff and the Board of Directors
  • Oversees strategy and implementation of Foundation’s Annual Giving Plan developed by the AVP – Annual Giving; ensures the Annual Giving team has support and resources in order to meet and exceed their goals
  • Oversees strategy and execution for donor engagement with the Senior Manager of Donor Relations & Stewardship, leading the development team to achieve highest levels of donor stewardship and increase engagement of existing donors; develops strategies and approaches to generate ever-higher levels of giving
  • Oversees strategy and execution for the Foundation’s major gifts and planned giving programs, ensuring these have the resources and support needed to meet and exceed their goals
  • Oversees overall processes and performance relating to donor management, research and cultivation, recognition and stewardship
  • Establishes performance measures, monitors results and assists the COO in evaluating the effectiveness of the development team and strategy
  • Ensures a culture where effective teamwork, collaboration and innovation are expected, recognized and rewarded; leads by example with regard to appropriate risk-taking, cross organizational cooperation and clear standards of conduct
  • Collaborates with communications and marketing to plan and oversee development and donor related publications, messaging and strategy
  • Evaluates and provides input on appropriate systems for fund development
  • Ensures compliance with all relevant regulations and laws, maintains accountability standards to donors and ensures compliance with code of ethical principles of professional conduct for fundraising executives
  • In every donor relationship, adheres to the highest ethical standards; demonstrates empathetic disposition and perseverance; reflects optimistic and positive attitude; and conveys sensitivity to needs of the donor

  • Possesses or has the ability to develop a broad and deep network in Dallas, the region and the state as a whole, and is well regarded in nonprofit and philanthropic communities. Travel will be a significant part of this role

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree required with concentration in marketing, journalism, communications, advertising or public relations preferred
  • Require minimum of 10 years in fundraising experience with five years at a management level
  • Must have demonstrated experience in developing and implementing successful, multi-million dollar fundraising strategies and supporting donor operations across all aspects of fundraising operations, including building the case, cultivating donors, managing an effective fundraising team, and soliciting and securing major and leadership level gifts
