Summary of Position

Big Thought is seeking an enthusiastic and experienced Senior Director of Development to lead fundraising efforts. Under the direction of the Chief Executive Officer, this person’s primary responsibility is to raise funds on behalf of the organization. He or she will work with the executive leadership team and the board of directors to set and meet revenue targets and is responsible for developing effective strategies that enable the organization to secure contributions from donors. This person is responsible for managing the development team; research and prospecting potential donors; donor cultivation, solicitation, management, and stewardship; proposal development; and management of recognition and benefits related to donor commitments. The Senior Director of Development is responsible for the planning and implementation of ongoing fundraising strategies and contributed income programs designed to drive organizational health, sustainability and growth.

About the Ideal Candidate:

The ideal candidate for this position will possess strong communication and analytical skills, be solution oriented, have experience managing through change, be an individual of impeccable integrity and high ethical standards with a proven ability to motivate and develop staff and foster a high level of teamwork. The candidate will have experience cultivating many types of donors, including foundations, corporations and individuals and demonstrate success prospecting new donors and increasing contributed revenue.

What the Role entails:

  • Lead the development department’s annual plan, including goal setting, strategy identification, benchmarking and evaluation of revenue generation strategies
  • Partner with CFO and CEO to establish annual fundraising goals
  • Support and partner with the Executive Leadership Team and Board of Directors in all fundraising efforts
  • Facilitation and presentation skills
  • Effectively communicate Big Thought’s program offerings
  • Develop and implement roadmaps for each fundraising strategy
  • Foster a mindset that fundraising is an organizational effort
  • Provide briefings and reporting on fundraising activities on a regular basis
  • Infuse inclusion and equity both internally and externally
  • Enhance research and identify prospective donors and cultivate relationships
  • Coordinate cross-project and cross-team activities that maximize organizational impact and revenue while fostering teamwork
  • Use design thinking to implement fundraising methodologies best suited to the organization
  • Manage development team

Minimum Qualifications

  • 7+ years of experience in nonprofit fundraising
  • Bachelor’s degree in business management, nonprofit management or related field preferred; Master’s a plus
  • Knowledge of donor CRMs
  • Management experience
  • High level of communication skills

Big Thought jobs are hands-on and can be physically demanding.  To perform the duties of these roles successfully, you may regularly be required to: sit, stand, or look at a computer screen for long periods of time; participate in external activities; use various office equipment, some manual; work in environment with loud sounds, multiple distractions and interruptions; be exposed to extreme hot or cold temperatures on occasion; maintain emotional control during stressful situations.
