Background –The mission of the SPCA of Texas is dedicated to providing every animal exceptional care and a loving home. It is the leading animal welfare organization in North Texas. Founded in 1938, the non-profit operates two shelters, three spay/neuter clinics, two mobile spay/neuter vehicles, one mobile adoptions vehicle and an animal rescue center, all located in Dallas and Collin Counties, and maintains a team of animal cruelty investigators who respond to thousands of calls in multiple North Texas counties. Moreover, the SPCA of Texas serves as an active resource center for an array of services that bring people and animals together to enrich each other’s lives.
Job Summary - The Planned Giving Officer is a key member of the development team, advancing planned giving and individual major gifts of Legacy Society members. The officer is responsible for managing the Legacy Society, the SPCA of Texas’ planned giving program, and managing and cultivating relationships with existing planned gift and major gift prospects, as well as identifying new prospects. An ability to empathize with donors and clearly communicate the SPCA of Texas mission is key.

The ideal candidate will be creative and entrepreneurial, with the ability to take initiative, work autonomously, and act with accountability. S/he will have exemplary fundraising and relationship building skills, the ability to listen and create a tailored pitch, and be excited by the responsibility of playing a key role in securing funding to support the SPCA of Texas’ ambitious development goals. Key Responsibilities:


  • Manage a blended donor prospect portfolio of 120+ prospects for either planned gifts or major gifts, with aggressive visit, solicitation and revenue goals.
  • Build relationships with donors and prospects who have high potential lifetime value to deeply engage them with the SPCA of Texas mission.
  • Oversee and manage the Legacy Society, including planning and implementing planned giving donor communications, marketing and donor appreciation events for society members
  • Assist Legacy members and planned giving donors with information on their options for their Legacy
  • Record, with timeliness and precision, information about prospects and donors using Raiser’s Edge; also report activity and monitor resources and expenditures associated with portfolio.
  • Build relationships with key stakeholders throughout the organization including program staff, senior leadership, volunteers and committee members to stay current on program offerings and impact.
  • Develop strong relationships with Program teams to develop and maintain up-to-date subject matter knowledge and deliver a robust range of high-touch donor engagement opportunities.
  • Work with Annual Fund team, brainstorm and implement experiential and creative practices for the stewardship of donor relationships, ensuring donors feel connected, informed, and have clear insight into the impact of their gifts/commitments.
  • Collaborate with other team members to ensure the timely and accurate completion of routine work such as call reports, gift acknowledgements, solicitation and cultivation mailings and event invitations.
  • Maintain ongoing familiarity with animal welfare research and trends.
  • Conduct regular research on prospects within portfolio, to include wealth capacity rating, giving history, and SPCA of Texas involvement.
  • Assist the Senior Vice President for Development and entire development team on special projects and events as they are identified.

  • Actively engage with volunteers in such a way that provides support for our volunteers and staff and proactively improves our volunteer program.
  • Be an ambassador for the SPCA of Texas, sharing the work and mission with your friends and family and be knowledgeable of the various ways to support our work.


Knowledge, skill, and abilities needed to perform the Essential functions of this position:

  • Must demonstrate the Core Values of the SPCA of Texas on and off the job.
  • 3-5 years of directly-related experience in planned giving or major-gift fundraising
  • Comfort interacting with high net-worth individuals and families
  • Superior written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills
  • “What else can I do?” mentality to go above and beyond customer service approach with internal and external audiences
  • Must deliver strong initiative, anticipation and innovative thinking
  • Raiser’s Edge knowledge and experience
  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail and ability to be self-motivated and disciplined
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and use of all social media channels
  • Willingness and ability to work a flexible schedule that includes long hours near/during events as well as some weekends and evenings, as well as travel regionally to meet donors
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university
  • Valid Texas driver’s license


Preferred qualifications:

Blackbaud/Raiser’s Edge certification
Preference to candidates with a Juris Doctor (JD)
