Organization Overview

NAMI North Texas addresses the unmet needs of individuals living with mental health conditions and their families through advocacy, education and support.

 

Position Summary

The Executive Director oversees, coordinates, and directs all program activities of the organization.  The National Alliance on Mental Illness North Texas affiliate facilitates grassroots advocacy efforts for individuals with mental health conditions and their family members.  Programs focus on family education and support, public education, self-help (peer) support groups, and advocacy.

The Executive Director is responsible for fundraising efforts including the planning, coordination, and implementation of fundraising activities or events as well as grant writing.  Financial planning and oversight of agency operation is essential along with innovative program development, staff management, membership growth, and agency expansion.

Responsibilities

Program and Services Leadership

  • Provides comprehensive leadership on all NAMI North Texas programs and services
  • Identifies goals, staff responsibilities, and timelines to reach measurable outcomes
  • Fosters trust and positive morale among staff, interns, volunteers, and Board of Directors
  • Manages the recruitment, assessment, and employment of paid staff and volunteers with Board oversight
  • Ensures job descriptions/protocols are updated as needed
  • Conducts regular (minimally annual) performance evaluations
  • Encourages professional development and education for Board, staff, and volunteers

Strategic Planning

  • Provides leadership in articulating and implementing NAMI North Texas mission, goals, and strategies
  • Identifies grant/program opportunities and delivers strategic recommendations to the Board on how to optimize short and long-term growth
  • Ensures NAMI North Texas pursues specific and quantifiable strategic objectives with financial targets
  • Works closely with Board president, executive committee, and committee chairs in developing plans and strategies for grants and programs
  • Assesses and re-evaluates overall NAMI North Texas performance annually for adherence to mission

Networking, Communications and Public Relations

  • Ensures community awareness of NAMI North Texas programs and services
  • Raises the profile and reputation of NAMI North Texas throughout the region
  • Establishes effective working relationships with key stakeholders including community groups, local decision makers, regional state organizations, government agencies, elected officials, and grantors

Board Relations and Development

  • Coordinates regular Board of Directors meetings, including preparing an agenda and materials
  • Establishes strong working relationships with Board members, facilitating an environment for active participation and involvement beyond Board meetings
  • Works closely with Board committees to develop and implement specific goals and objectives
  • Works closely with Board members to identify new Board and committee members whose talents, expertise, and experience will further the NAMI North Texas’ mission and provide support for the organization

Financial Management and Fund Development

  • Creates, implements, and monitors quarterly, annual, and long-range fund development plans
  • Prepares annual budget in collaboration with Board Treasurer
  • Implements sound financial and accounting policies and procedures
  • Provides monthly financial statements and reports to Board for oversight and approval
  • Provides leadership on fundraising plans and activities
  • Identifies and researches new fundraising and grant opportunities and initiatives and submits proposals for relevant grants with Board approval

Volunteer Development

  • Develops strategy to effectively recruit, manage, and use volunteers
  • Develops job descriptions for volunteer positions
  • Provides volunteer trainings

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required, advanced degree preferred
  • Minimum 3-5 years of demonstrated leadership and/or management experience preferably in a human services area and/or other not-for-profit agency
  • Proven track record and ability to direct total operation
  • Self-directed, proactive problem-solver who can organize and motivate others to achieve
  • Exceptional budgeting and fiscal management skills
  • Experience with marketing and/or public relations
  • Strong ability to cultivate the creative ideas of others, connect ideas and project potential outcomes
  • Strong leadership qualities and superb interpersonal skills
  • Outgoing, approachable and effective relationship-builder
  • Ability to work efficiently with Boards, committees and community stakeholders
  • Proven ability to work with people and organizations of diverse backgrounds, philosophies, cultures, races, languages, sexual orientations, etc.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills
  • Knowledgeable about mental illnesses and highly motivated to help those affected and their families
