Title: Director of Operations

Reports to: Executive Director

Hours: 40 hours/week; in office and on the Trail; some evening/weekend hours for special events

Salary: Commensurate with experience. Three weeks paid vacation per year, plus office holidays. This position does not include health benefits.

Timing: This position is open and immediately available.

The Director of Operations is involved in all aspects of Katy Trail excellence. Charged with maintaining and enhancing Dallas’ beloved landmark, this job combines management of the physical needs of Trail, participating in new initiatives, working with a wide variety of constituents, and overseeing our signature event, the Katy 5K. The Director of Operations will be a key member of the Friends of the Katy Trail staff and will make important contributions to the Katy Trail.

  • Oversee landscape maintenance contracts to ensure the Trail stays clean and beautiful
  • Oversee security company and work with them to track accurate incident data
  • Oversee Trail Managers to ensure features like irrigation, lights, and fountains are all working in proper order
  • Work closely with the City of Dallas Parks Department to make sure trash pick-up stays on schedule, downed trees are removed in timely manner, undeveloped areas tended to, etc.
  • Responsible for the coordination and management of the Safety Committee, including pulling incident data reports
  • Manage construction and maintenance upgrades and repairs on the Trail
  • Coordinate work crews for FKT
  • Work closely with Trail constituents on new projects like upgrades to landscaping, new construction, etc.
  • Manage the installation, upkeep, and replacement of signage on the Trail, including safety and donor recognition signage
  • Keep people counters in working order and extrapolate data
  • Oversee all logistical needs of the Katy 5K
  • Responsible for the coordination and management of the Katy 5K Committee
  • Work with the Director of Major Gifts to implement donor-funded features on the Trail
  • Coordinate schedule for the rental of the Katy Trail for outside events and ensure that all requirements are met

The Katy Trail is a treasured Dallas greenspace and one of the most important public spaces and destinations in the city.  Since 1997, the mission of Friends of the Katy Trail has been to maintain, enhance, and advocate for the Katy Trail as the premier trail for recreation, wellness, and alternative transportation in the City of Dallas. In 2022, Friends of the Katy Trail will celebrate 25 years of managing the Trail for the benefit of Dallas citizens and visitors.

This is an exciting time to join Friends of the Katy Trail.  The pandemic has shown the essential role the Katy Trail plays in the mental and physical health of Dallas, and the Trail now has 1.5 million visits per year.  In 2022, we plan to expand our outreach to the community as well as our new Katy Trail Art initiative; continue to grow membership, corporate, and other support; hold another successful Katy 5K; and more.
