Developed for Impact: Building a High-Performing Board

This course will provide you with an understanding of the fundamental principles and best practices for developing and working with an impactful nonprofit board of directors.  Whether you serve on a board of directors or work closely with one, this class will help you understand:  board roles and responsibilities (including legal obligations of the board and the division of duties between the board and executive director), best practices for board development (recruitment, orientation and engagement), use of committees and committee charters, strategies for effective meetings, and the board’s role in fundraising.

In this course you will:

  • Understand the fundamental roles and responsibilities of nonprofit boards
  • Recognize the strategies for developing an effective board of directors
  • Learn to utilize board members’ expertise for greater mission impact

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR

Sam Hamann

Sam is CNM’s Senior Consultant for Strategic Consulting Services. He brings experience from the legal field and working with nonprofit organizations as a community partner at a local church. As an attorney, Sam’s experience includes advising clients on formation of entities, organizational structure, and other corporate and tax matters. Sam has direct experience in the organization and implementation of strategic plans, including development of plan and communication with stakeholders. Through this work, Sam has experience working with boards of directors and leaders of organizations regarding key strategic matters.

Additionally, Sam has experience in community partnerships through working with nonprofits to achieve goals related to education, homelessness, fighting hunger, and a number of other causes seeking to strengthen communities. Sam earned a Masters of Divinity degree from Brite Divinity School in Fort Worth, Texas, a Juris Doctor, cum laude, from SMU Dedman School of Law in Dallas, Texas, and a Bachelor of Science in Economics, magna cum laude, from Texas Christian University, in Fort Worth, Texas.
