Conflict Resolution

Dealing with conflict doesn’t have to be difficult. Most of us have a general understanding of how to deal with conflict, but when was the last time you took a minute to think about the conflict resolution process? By understanding the process of dealing with conflict, we can start to become more aware of our misunderstandings. We can deal with small issues before they become mountains.

In this workshop, participants will identify their personal approach to conflict and discuss how these approaches can be useful and harmful depending on the situation. After identifying conflict resolution styles, we will explore a process for conflict resolution that creates a safe, supportive environment for people to openly discuss issues. We will also discuss the difference between being a party to a conflict and trying to mediate a conflict as a manager or colleague. Participants will have the ability to discuss and explore various strategies and leave with resources for future development.

Learning objectives:

  • Identify personal approach to conflict resolution
  • Compare/Contrast conflict resolution and conflict mediation or management
  • Understand a conflict resolution process that works
  • Explore various strategies and tips for handling conflict in a positive way

Outline:

  1. Approaches to Conflict
    1. Utilize assessment to identify personal approach to conflict
    2. Evaluate how each approach fits different situations
  2. Resolution vs. Management
    1. Discuss the differences between being involved in the conflict versus being a 3rd party to the conflict.
    2. Compare/Contrast the different processes for each situation.
  3. Barriers to Resolution
    1. Identify the various barriers that exist to resolution (experience, bias, communication style, emotional control, etc.)
    2. Explore the best practices for managing these barriers and removing obstacles to resolution.
  4. Action Plan
    1. Define an action plan for handling conflict in the future.

Dr. Stevie Dawn serves as CEO of Orange Compass, a corporate training company dedicated to providing staff and leadership training to organizations. Stevie Dawn brings a variety of experience in the corporate, non-profit, and governmental sectors. She has owned multiple small businesses and specializes in Emotional Intelligence strategies for the workplace. She enjoys challenging people to change their workplace behaviors. Her educational background includes a Master’s Degree in Sociology from Wichita State

University and a doctorate in Leadership from Colorado State University. With over 20 years of teaching and training experience, Dr. Stevie Dawn delivers training sessions with humor and high-energy that leave all participants inspired.
